Manifesting change is my PhD project exploring what opportunities might be revealed when design revisits everyday technologies?

if we question our default method of housing digital products, we are free to ponder softer, more engaging, curious, humorous and varied coverings.

if we can play with the location of solar cells, does efficiency need to be the driving factor?

if charging time is not crucial, are there other sources of power available within the home?

What then? Maybe some of these alternatives might also be less polluting, produced more locally of more locally appropriate materials and still be appropriate to their tasks.

This project aims to probe the decisions already taken, to develop the most efficient, cheapest, quickest items and instead asks what if we as designers used other criteria to make those decisions. What if designers really explored the technologies and processes involved in manufacture of goods as a design material. What then? Maybe some of these alternatives might also be less polluting, produced more locally of more locally appropriate materials and still be appropriate to their tasks. Could this lead to more mindful manufacture and more considered consumption?
